Open Picture
Key shortcut: Ctrl+O
This displays a standard file open dialog from which you can select any picture to open.

You can open a picture for viewing a number of different ways:
- You can double click on a suitable picture file type (see notes below),
- You can drag and drop a picture file onto an XPE window.
- On the XPE, click the open icon and select a picture from your disk.
- You can select this Open option (or type Ctrl+O) and select a picture this way.
Notes
- If you double click a picture it opens this is a new window so you can have multiple pictures open at once.
- It remembers where you last opened a file from and shows that file location in the Open dialog. This includes if you open a picture by drag and drop onto an XPE window, or just double-clicking on a picture.
- Double clicking to open a suitable file type only works while you have XPE associated with the correct file type.
To change which program is used to open any file type, first locate an example file, right click on it and select Open With option, and then select the Choose program option to select XPE or any other program. Select the check box 'always use the selected program' to keep this setting.
- This option is not available if the XPE is being used from Xara Xtreme.
You can select to open multiple pictures at once by holding the Ctrl-key down in the Open dialog while clicking on multiple files. Or alternatively you can drag multiple files onto any open XPE window.
Picture File Types
The Xara Picture Editor can open the following types of picture file:
JPG (or JPEG or JPE)
JFIF
BMP
GIF
PNG
TIF (or TIFF)
EXIF
WMF
EMF
ICO
JPEG is the format recommended for photos—this is by far the best, most compact format for photographs to be stored.
The XPE can support alpha-channel (transparent) images from the PNG and TIFF format.
Through the use of plug-ins it's possible that other picture formats can be opened and saved.
Note: If the XPE is being used from within another application, such as Xara Xtreme, this option may not appear.
